HBA Special Olympics Volunteers Help Make Table Tennis Event A Success

Members of the Houston Bar Association’s Special Olympics Committee helped the Special Olympics of Texas make its Table Tennis Tournament on January 24, 2009, at Alamo Elementary School in Baytown, a huge success.  Committee members volunteered their own time and recruited other volunteers for the event. Approximately 40 volunteers spent several hours on Saturday working in shifts and serving as scoring officials and referees as well as helping athletes and event organizers throughout the day.

Forty-seven athletes from the Goose Creek, Clear Creek, Royal, and Kingwood-Humble school districts participated in the tournament this year. The athletes competed in four divisions of Individual Skills, Singles, Traditional Doubles, and Unified Doubles.

The HBA Special Olympics Committee surprised the athletes by arranging for a visit from Huijing Wang, the current Texas table tennis champion and the number three ranked woman table tennis player in the United States. Ms. Wang, along with Houston Table Tennis Association President Gabriel Cserei and HTTA’s Benson Ngo, handed out medals to athletes and participated in exhibition play to entertain the athletes and other attendees.  The HBA Special Olympics Committee would like to thank Ms. Wang, Mr. Cserei, Mr. Ngo, and the HTTA for helping make this day extra special for the athletes.

The Tournament was very well-run and provided a tremendous opportunity for volunteers to work with the players, who often played several matches each round.   The following HBA Special Olympics Committee members served as volunteers and volunteer coordinators: Scott Arrington, Frank Daniel, Kenneth Krock, Carmen Ng, and Lauren Waddell.  The HBA Special Olympics Committee would like to express their appreciation to all of the volunteers that participated in this exciting event.

Like the other events sponsored by the Special Olympics of Texas, the Table Tennis Tournament allows athletes to compete against one another, display their sportsmanship and build friendships.  The HBA Committee is extremely proud to be able to support the Special Olympics and these wonderful events.
